A three year old Tennessee toddler mistook a loaded handgun for a Wii controller and killed herself.

The girl's stepfather left the .308 caliber weapon loaded, sitting on a table in the living room, where the toddler later picked it up. The girl allegedly shot herself in the abdomen after supposedly mistaking the semi-automatic handgun for a Wii remote.

She was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead later that night. The police are not treating it as suspicious.

The stepfather (who owned the gun) claimed he was asleep at the time, but that the girl’s mother was in the room with her. The mother told authorities that the girl may have believed the handgun was a Wii controller resembling a gun. The stepfather claims that his family had been disturbed by a prowler earlier that night, and that was why the gun was out and loaded.

implying a weapon is supposed to be non-lethal

Perhaps if the parents had instructed their child to operate a gun she wouldn't have fired it.

Those parents should be thrown in jail for life. I don't care if there was a prowler lurking around, you NEVER leave a loaded gun within sight/reach of a child. Don't those people watch the news?!

Both the mother and stepfather should be held fully responsible for murdering this little girl.

This is not a simple case of negligence, but a case where the parents allowed their daughter to wield and operate a lethal weapon.
