The same reason I'm going to state here was stated during the televised Republican presidential debates several months ago. The presence of homosexuals in the military decreases unit cohesion, which is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL to the success of the unit in completing its missions. Whether the heterosexual soldiers in the military are homophobic and should "just get over it" or not, the reality of the matter is that heterosexuals make up the overwhelming majority of the military and the military exists for a very specific purpose and the ability of the military to serve that purpose depends greatly on unit cohesion. As such, compromising unit cohesion is unacceptable for any reason, including "it's not fair to gays."
